History of the Soviet Union

December 31, 1999

von Hagen, Mark Silver_nugget
History of the Soviet Union

Please keep in mind that this review is more than 5 years old.

An intelligent, solid lecturer with a flair for witty jabs at communist dogma. Unlike other scholars of communist history (most notably, those in the political science department), von Hagen has a much more balanced view. This leads him to talk alot about the historiography of the Soviet Union. One of the better history courses I've taken, because the focus is on why historians take up certain positions and consider certain questions important, not just on what actually happened (though there is plenty of that, well-organized and presented clearly).

Workload:

Mixed. Midterm and final, each with an additional take-home essay question. Light term paper on soviet films.
