[CHEM W3546] Advanced Organic Chemistry Lab
Departments: Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
Professors: Tauqir Fillebeen, Fay Ng, and Jack Norton
I have to disagree with the reviewer below by saying that Fay's lab class is actually one of the easiest courses you'll take at Columbia (easier than the REGULAR orgo lab class, from what I've heard). Because you are not graded on the CONTENT of your lab reports (i.e. your accidental experiments), you won't be punished for getting a poor yield or no product at all. In fact, a poor yield is very easy to write about so often those lab reports were the easiest to do.
The only really challenging part of the class, in my opinion, was the quizzes. But those don't count for much in the grand scheme of things, so I would definitely recommend this class to any Chem or Biochem major. It's an easy, nonstressful class where an A is not unattainable.
minimal. 4 projects, often going weeks without lab reports. bimonthly quizzes.
NO MIDTERM OR FINAL!
Yes, it's an advanced science course, but if you're a biochemistry major who needs to fulfill a lab requirement, this is a great way to do it. Sure, it's hard; this was the hardest class I've ever taken at Columbia to date, but it was also the most enjoyable. There are 4 multi-day labs over the course of the semester. In Spring 2011, they were Catalytic Asymmetric Synthesis, Organic Polymers, Combinatiorial Chemistry and Supramolecular Chemsitry. None of the topics are covered in any sort of depth in regular organic lectures, so you will be learning something new every class. That said, the lab reports and quizzes are hard. The short ones are 6-8 pages and the long ones are 7-10. They're graded fairly, and there is a curve at the end. You have to be willing to teach yourself a lot of chemistry from journal articles, since that's really the only way to do the lab reports. The Journal of Chemical Education will become your best friend.
Fay is probably my favorite teacher here at Columbia. She explains everything well, and will help you whenever you need it. She'd talk with us at the start of every class just about how we were doing, and you could tell that she genuinely cared about her students.
2 6-8 page lab reports, 2 7-10 page lab reports, 6 quizzes, 10 pre-labs.
Allow 10 hours for each lab report, long or not. Spend at least an hour studying for the quizzes. The pre-labs can be done in your sleep.
Jack is an amazing person. The year I took Advanced Organic, four of the first year graduate students ended up choosing Jack as their doctoral advisor, not only because his research is interesting, but because he is genuinely a caring and considerate, sweet prof. I've never taken Gen. Chem with him, but I imagine his cute personalisms will carry over. His students often kindheartedly make fun of his shyness, his awkward hand gestures and his overall Jackness, but its because they love him.
Most likely, he will get into some kinetics stuff (not sure what the GChem curriculum is), topics that he covers in his own research. His lectures in Adv. Organic were always very well-organized, he lectured pretty close to the textbook, his problem sets were long and challenging of course, but that's to be expected. His midterm followed his lectures/psets pretty closely, and he graded very fairly.
My main advice to frosh taking his GChem course: go see him! If there's anything you don't understand, or if you're just looking to chat about the class, etc. shoot him an email. I'm sure he'll reply. He's probably very busy (I think he's pretty involved in the department) but he'll always make time for a student!
Tauqir is amazing. Though she mainly oversees the regular orgo labs, Tauqir basically teaches this one herself. If you've managed to get to know her at all in orgo lab, you've come to realize she is by far the funniest, nicest and smartest instructor this department has to offer. In a roster dominated by "serious" (aka ones who take themselves too seriously) research professors, Tauqir is like a breath of fresh air. More often than not she is more knowledgeable than the lecture professors, but most importantly she can explain things without condescending.
By all means, take Advanced Orgo Lab if you're interested in the subject. The class itself is taught with less structure than Orgo lab, which thankfully means more individual initiative along with more interesting/challenging lab work. It is by no means disorganized though, for Tauqir's been at this for quite a bit.
A few longer labs that generally run over the time allotted, but what is due and when is flexible because this class isn't about premed grade-grubbing so much as it is about developing your own lab skills and interests. One final synthesis/investigation that is quite difficult, but plenty of help is provided.
Michael is the WORST TA one can ever have and will ever have. He has no knowledge of organic chemistry whatsoever. He is incredibly rude. If you are taking this class next year and are in the section taught by Nuckolls, and if you learn that the TA is Michael Lefenfeld, SWITCH IMMEDIATELY TO THE SECTION TAUGHT BY TAQUIR. IT IS WORTH SWITCHING YOUR ENTIRE SCHEDULE AROUND.
