Prof. Archer is great. She's extremely enthusiastic about the subject, and will keep you awake even through the more boring parts of music history. Her lectures are full of facts but you don't really need to know that much for the final.
DO go to class, though, because that's where all of the information is coming from. Don't bother buying the textbook, because you'll never need it. She's a very fair grader, but the listening quizzes are TERRIBLE.
Some advice: only take the spring semester- unless Gregorian chants fascinate you, you won't like the fall semester.
3 papers (difficult but graded fairly), 3 listening quizzes (nearly impossible), and a final (not bad)
I found the subject to be extremely boring, but Prof Archer's great. She's very enthusiastic and LOVES what she teaches.
The papers are OK, but the listening tests are pretty difficult, so make sure you don't leave them till the last minute like I did. Overall, if music before 1750 interests you, definitely take this class with her.
Not too bad. 3 papers, 3 listening quizzes, final
Gail Archer is such a passionate and well educated woman. If you give a little, she will give back a lot. The material isn't the most interesting (even for Music Majors, such as myself) but listening to her lecture makes the class that much better because of her enthusiasm. She's infectious!
Easy enough if you keep on top of it. A few listening quizzes and a final, but no midterm. Though taking notes is important, it's actually not entirely going to kill you if you miss a few classes because she offers a review session a few days before the Final entailing every aspect of what's on the test. Also, don't leave studying for the listening quizzes to the last minute -- they do affect your grade!
I love, love, LOVE this class. Prof. Boerger is an engaging lecturer and a truly passionate teacher and lover of music. I never thought Gregorian chant could be interesting, but she really made all the old stuff come alive. Easily one of the best classes I have had at Columbia -- I cannot recommend it more highly.
No reading (except for one very short book); 3 essays, which are graded toughly, but she makes her expectations WELL known; 3 listening quizzes (tedious to study for, but very interesting); final exam .... all in all, a perfectly managable workload
Don't take this class if you don't really like classical music or if you're not familiar with music. Or, if you think the class will be easy. It's not. Her essays are ridiculous.
great lecturer, but really unfair. Gave a ridiculous final. I got As on everything and came out of teh final thinking i got a B... So all was sweet. AND THEN I Got a D on teh final (she was excessively picky when grading) and ended up getting a B. Watch out... there are a bunch of music geeks in teh class who spoil teh bvell curve. Overall... dont take the class if youre not a music geek.
not much at all
I, too, found that she spoke to the class as if we were in kindergarten. Go with Boerger, she is just a smart and a lot more interesting.
